Quinton Patton Scouting Report

Positives
  • very productive against all competition (see Texas A and M game)
  • great hands
  • exceptional body control
  • enough deep speed to take the top off of a defense (but not considered a burner)
  • explosive after the catch, often makes the first guy miss
  • very productive
  • gets physical with defensive backs
  • good leaping ability able to time his jump balls well
  • good route runner

Weaknesses
  • out-wills defenders for the ball, makes many contested catches (this is somewhat of a concern as scouts fear he will not be able to out-will NFL defenders as easily)
  • good not great speed
  • doesn't create separation consistently

Bottom line: This kid can flat out play, but can he be productive against NFL defensive backs? The answer is yes and no. A large percent of Patton's catches came when he was covered and simply outworked the defensive back. While this is an admirable trait it is concerning that he was unable to get consistent separation against MAC defensive backs. However his combination of great hands and YAC ability leave a prototypical slot receiver capable of beating up on smaller nickle corners. Teams looking for a plug and play slot receiver similar to Golden Tate will not be disappointed. However if asked to play consistently on the outside Patton will find that NFL DB's are much harder to abuse.

Bottom Line: 2-3 round (one of the rare prospects who could go where they should)
