Matt Stafford's broken back

Matt Stafford does not get enough credit. Sure his incredible numbers and limited playoff success are easy scapegoats for service level analysis. However, his supporting casts have been amongst the worst in the league consistently. Even when he had Megatron his defences were average and their running game (aside from this year) was historically futile. In fact they went multiple seasons without featuring a 100 yard game from anybody. Still Stafford has been lauded as one of the toughest and most clutch quarterbacks in the game today. Last season was a different story, his play seemed to bottom out. He only threw 21 touchdowns as the lions struggled to a 6-10 record. Was Stafford done? Had he plateaued as a quarterback? Should the lions move on? These were real questions being asked in a quarterback starved league. Rest assured though lions fans, in Stafford like fashion he played through a debilitating injury and didn't make a big stink about it. A broken back plagued the lions sig...

Poor Daniel Jones

Image
When Daniel Jones was selected sixth overall he never stood a chance. He was picked instead of Dwayne Haskins who, by all accounts is a far superior prospect. New York is hard enough but if the  fans and media feel you are undeserving then the climb to liability is that much steeper. It also doesn't help that the Manning family has been in bed with Duke football (Jones' alma mater) for some time. Both Eli and Peyton train with coach David Cutcliffe every offseason. It begs suspicion that a Duke QB was selected to potentially backup Eli Manning. Rumblings of Archie Manning's power over the organization appear to be accurate. Well were on the topic of Archie, Jones bears a striking resemblance to Eli and Peyton. Hmmmmmmm...... Jones himself was painfully average at Duke. He had a career compeltion percentage under 60% and his best year featured only 22 touchdowns. However, he does pass the eye test at 6'4 and appears to have some athleticism. His camp performanc...

Antonio Brown

Image
Antonio Brown aka Mr. Big Chest, aka the blonde mustache, aka the locker room cancer went on a tear this offseason. He meticulously manufactured his way out of Pittsburgh because of beef with Ben Rothelisberger. He began his plan last year when he inexplicably missed Pittsburgh's final game. This absence caused them to miss the playoffs all together. He then spent the offseason chirping away at Ben and all around good guy Juju Smith-Schuster. His angle was and is that he felt disrespected by Big Ben's "owner mentality" (whatever that means). There have been rumblings for a while that Brown although incredible on the field is sensitive and temperamental off of it. He appeared to be irked by the rise of Smith-Schuster and has always been a numbers first guy by all accounts. He continued his exodus from the team by bleaching his mustache and hair. He then began a string of irrational and non-sensical instagram lives where he referred to himself as Mr. Big Chest and de...

Hope in Cleveland

The laughing stock of professional sports has something to look forward to. They found their franchise cornerstone in Baker Mayfield. A guy whose swagger, leadership and play finally provides a listless team the identity they have been searching for since their inception in Cleveland. Baker is just the tip of the iceberg for this team. Draft picks such as Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward and Nick Chubb have created a young nucleus in which to build on. Couple this with some splashy moves: Acquiring mega star Odell Beckham and competent pass rusher Olivier Vernon, and you have a team on the up and up. This team from top to bottom looks like one of the most talented in the league. It will be up to Freddie Kitchens (a first time head coach) to keep this collection of talent and larger then life egos in check and steer them in the right direction. We already know he clicks with Baker and runs a competent offence. The key for Kitchens will be relying on his defensive staff and assistants to help ...

Back with a venegeance

Its been a while folks. Life truly does get in the way sometimes but I'm back at the best possible time. And by best I mean the offseason when absolutely nothing of note is going down. I am going to try something out here. My take on all the big stories of the offseason. I know most of these will not be exactly topical but this blog is for me just as much as it is for you. This will be a series of stories, todays feature is the Cardinals. 1. Transition in the desert: As a homer and known biased Cardinals fan, I will begin with what I perceive to be the biggest story of the offseason. The cards cleaned house after a disastrous season that saw the team crumble in all facets of the game. The offence resembled that of a drunk high school coaches "pro style scheme" fever dream. David Johnson could not have been used more incorrectly as he was shoved up the middle time and time again. The offensive line was a certified disaster. The starting lineup at the end of the year co...
